Do HVAC technicians need to have a license?

It depends on the state. Some states require HVAC technicians to acquire a state license, but not all. For instance, Colorado does not license HVAC technicians as they do plumbers and electricians, but they do require HVAC contractors to be licensed at the local level. There are also other requirements depending on the type of work a technician intends to do. For instance, if a technician wants to be able to handle refrigerants, they’d need to obtain federal certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

If you’re looking for an HVAC technician, it’s worth checking if they’re certified by the North American Technician Excellence (NATE), a non-profit organization that certifies technicians after going through a series of experience and knowledge-based tests. Technicians are also subjected to additional training and tests every two years under NATE.
