difference between an accountant and a bookkeeper

The distinction between accounting and bookkeeping can be confusing sometimes, but the two aren’t one and the same. Bookkeepers record financial transactions, while accountants do more than that. You can say that accounting involves interpreting and analyzing financial data, while bookkeeping does not.
The confusion stems from the fact that accountants sometimes do bookkeeping too. Bookkeepers, on the other hand, can use special computer software to perform accounting tasks. I have a neighbor who works as an accountant, even though she generally does bookkeeping in Kingston. So in theory accounting and bookkeeping are not the same thing. But in real life, the difference may not matter so much.
