What are the requirements for becoming a data entry clerk?

Officially there are no requirements. States and the federal government often impose restrictions on who can practice professions that are either dangerous or disruptive. Neither of those labels applies to data entry work, so the most you’ll be required to have is a high-school degree. There are no college degrees associated with the profession either.

That said, it’s hard to find work as a data entry clerk if you have no experience and zero relevant certifications. Taking part in apprenticeship and certification programs can both make it easier for you to find work in the profession.

On top of that, some types of data entry work require specialized knowledge. Law firms, for example, may prefer to give data entry tasks to people with a basic understanding of the law, as they’ll have an easier time spotting and highlighting relevant information whenever it appears.

If you want to become a data entry clerk, this guide may be able to help.
