I can think of a few good ways to help a business be a more positive force in the community. Of course, how much of an impact you can have will depend on how big your business is, but we should all do our part. Even small businesses can have a serious impact on people’s lives.

First and foremost, I think your priority should be to be a good employer. Pay fair wages, offer decent benefits, and treat your employees well. It’s hard to quantify the negative impact that a toxic workplace has on the community, but it definitely doesn’t make life any better. If you can’t afford to give everyone a dream benefits package, you can at least try to make sure your workers aren’t feeling miserable at the end of every day.

Speaking of workers, expanding who you are willing to hire is also a good idea. There are plenty of charities, non-profits, and government initiatives out there meant to help different groups of people find work. Groups who would typically struggle in the job market. And you can do the community a great service by collaborating with those organizations when looking for new talent.

A good example of what I’m talking about is atWork Australia‘s disability employment services. People with disabilities can be as productive as any worker with minimal adaptations, and giving them a chance to earn an income and be productive can change the lives of their whole family.

Finally, you can also do your part by supporting local businesses and local talent. The more cash you inject into the local community, the stronger it’ll be. And if you’re buying goods and materials in bulk, getting it from a local supplier can have a huge impact on their financial security. It’s also a good idea to network with other local business owners. Look for opportunities to set up collaborations and partnerships that can benefit you both.
