What can I feed them instead?

If you have grass hay, you can give them that. Hay aids their digestion and helps prevent their teeth from overgrowing. The good thing about hay is that guinea pigs can eat as much as they want of them, unlike pellets which need to always be portioned. You can also feed them freshly cut grass from your lawn if it wasn’t sprayed with pesticides.

Fresh vegetables are also a great option. In fact, it’s ideal to supplement their diet with veggies to give them all the nourishment they need. The best vegetables to feed them include red and green peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, zucchini, carrots, and leafy greens like kale, lettuce, and cilantro. If you’re feeding them vegetables, limit the serving to one cup per day.

Fruits may also work if it’s just one day and you can be sure to buy the pellets tomorrow. It’s not ideal to serve them too frequently since they are high in fructose. Bananas, kiwis, strawberries, blueberries, oranges, and apples are some great options, but you might want to give them just a little to prevent diarrhea.
