I am disabled and cannot find work in Australia; what should I do?

As someone with a disability, you will already know that the basic tasks people carry out daily can be more challenging for you. It can feel unfair, and as someone with a physical disability, I know exactly how you feel. One thing I found during my time unable to find work was that I was going down the wrong path. I would spend a lot of time trying to get into roles I was unqualified for or where the workload would be unsuitable for my physical condition.

A friend passed on the name of atWork Australia, a disability employment service provider that helps to connect disabled people with employment opportunities. Through a quick interview, I could work out where my limits were and where I could start legitimately targeting to find employment down the line. That was very useful for me as I could find a position that suited the employer that I got to work with and me. Without this, I would probably still be unemployed.

The advice I was given was, in general, very useful. I started looking into what I lacked and could work towards. While my disability meant I was precluded from some forms of work, which is fair, I did not want to be unemployed.

Thanks to atWork Australia, I could get over the issue and start working. Today I have a few freelance roles I carry out for people that I would never have found on my own. Thanks to atWork, I understand that I have an important value to our society and that finding work is not impossible.
