An endoscope is a medical instrument used to view a person’s GI tract, and therefore the sterility of the equipment should be ensured at all times. Usually, medical instruments are sterilised using an autoclave machine, but because the parts of an endoscope can be damaged by heat, special liquid disinfectants are used to clean and sterilise it. The process involves taking apart the components of the endoscope and cleaning them manually before soaking in the disinfectant solution. Note that you can’t just use any cleaning agent such as alcohol or bleach, as there are high-level disinfectants specifically made for this job. The cleaning process also requires drying before placing the instrument in a sterile wrap.
Endoscopy decontamination is a complicated, meticulous procedure that should only be performed by experts, using medical-grade cleaning solutions.
