How can I get rid of rats from my shop?

If you have rats in your shop, it can pose serious risks to your business. I had a similar problem in my store in Tonbridge, so I know how damaging it can be.

If your shop is in the food industry, it may even lead to health and safety compliance failures and business closure. Here are some steps you can take to rectify the problem as quickly as possible:

  • Pay closer attention to cleanliness

Rats seek out places where they can access food. If you have rats, it may be a sign that your establishment isn’t clean, or that food is being left out and attracting them. Do a thorough deep-clean and make sure access to things like bins is blocked.

  • Seal all openings to your property

Rats can squeeze into very small cracks. Make sure your shop is properly sealed, and repair any cracks in doors, windows, or walls so that no more rodents can enter.

  • Use poison bait or rat traps

Once you’re certain no more rats can enter, get rid of any remaining in the store by using rat traps or poison baits. It’s usually best to let a professional take care of this step so that it’s done correctly and safely.
Personally, I found that pest control in Tonbridge was affordable so I hired Colin Coley Pest Control & Wildlife Management and let them handle it. If you can’t afford it, though, just be careful. Poison bait can be dangerous if ingested by humans, so make sure you seal off any areas you use it in from the public.
