Yes! People receiving DSP are allowed to work up to 29 hours per week without losing their DSP. This is a great way to encourage people to be self-sufficient and live meaningful lives.

I am receiving DSP too, so I understand the dilemma perfectly well. I am scared to lose my benefits, but at the same time, I don’t want to rely on the government my entire life. While we are fortunate to be living in a country where people living with a disadvantage are assisted, DSP alone isn’t usually enough to live our best lives. I also wanted to reduce the burden on my parents, who had to take double jobs just to make ends meet.

Moreover, we humans need more than just money. We need purpose in life. We are more than our disabilities, and despite any physical, intellectual, or mental limitations bestowed upon us, we still want to be useful, and I am glad that the Australian government supports that too! I don’t know about you or the others, but I would want to be treated just the same as people who weren’t born with any limitations. While my workplace may have to accept that certain adjustments have to be made to accommodate my needs, I am confident that I can do my job perfectly and that my specific strengths are unique to me and cannot easily be found in another candidate.

Whenever you’re ready to start looking for a job that aligns with your passion, values, and goals, I suggest you check out atWork Australia.
