The Australian government is aware that individuals receiving DSP are not exactly living like kings. The goal of the DSP is to help us survive and pay for our essentials until our situation improves. Of course, it’s different for those who are severely incapacitated and who might receive DSP until they’re 65, but I’m sure you wouldn’t want to switch places with them.

The government will not punish you for having a job. It encourages everyone, no matter what their circumstances, to aim for self-sufficiency. You can work up to 29 hours weekly and keep your DSP, so if you’ve found any job opportunity, you might want to grab it.

Thanks to our changing times, plenty of remote work and other kinds of jobs have been born. Since you could post this question, I assume you’re an individual who can read, and write and may have average or even above-average intelligence. I’m pretty sure there’s a job that is suitable for you!

I am receiving DSP too, and I don’t want to lose it only because my condition prevents me from working full-time, and there’s no way to survive without me. But if it were up to me, I would rather lose it and earn my own money from my full-time job. I always hear people complaining about the rat race, but if it were only possible, I would want to work 40 hours per week like a normal person and feel useful.

I am thankful that our government has set up disability employment services to help people like us find employers who will be happy to have us onboard. You won’t believe how many employers are happy to take a chance on us, which can add some meaning to our lives. I can recommend a trusted disability employment services provider that I used.
