Well, the first thing you should do is check if you actually need a license. In the United States, only the following states require that locksmiths have a state-issued license:

  1. Alabama
  2. California
  3. Connecticut
  4. Illinois
  5. Louisiana
  6. Maryland
  7. Nebraska
  8. Nevada
  9. New Jersey
  10. North Carolina
  11. Oklahoma
  12. Oregon
  13. Tennessee
  14. Texas
  15. Virginia

If you don’t live in one of those states, then you likely don’t need a license to become a locksmith. You may still want to get training and certification, but in theory, there will be nothing stopping you from learning everything on the job. Assuming someone will hire you.

In case you do actually need a license, the process is relatively straightforward in most states. All you need to do is complete locksmithing training in an institution that follows your state’s guidelines, and then pass your state’s certification exam. You may also need to go through a background check and submit yourself to other types of bureaucracy before you are able to get your license.
