Is dental care expensive in Canada?

Finding affordable dental care in Canada is relatively easy for a variety of reasons. First of all, certain specific types of dental care are covered by free healthcare in some regions. In Ontario, for example, babies born with birth defects such as a cleft lip or a cleft palate get it fixed for free.

On top of that, dentists in Canada have fee guides that they follow. A dentist operating in Toronto, for example, will usually follow the Ontario Dental Association Fee guide because that’s the guide insurance companies often use when offering reimbursements. These guidelines ensure that the prices of dental services don’t skyrocket.

That said, Ontario is just one of Canada’s ten provinces, and each province has its own fee guide, which leads to quite a lot of price variation between the provinces. A 30-minute dental cleaning, for example, will cost $114 in Ontario, $91 in British Columbia, and $140.20 in Alberta. These are 2019-2020 numbers; the fee guides are updated regularly.
