What is On-Grid and Off-Grid Solar Power?

Given all the environmental and economic benefits of solar power, the systems are getting more popular everywhere. However, be it domestic or commercial use, the cost of installing a solar power system is high but is offset in the long run. So when you are making such a heavy investment in equipment you must understand what type of system is ideal to meet your needs.

There are mainly two types of solar power systems, on-grid, and off-grid. An on-grid system is connected to the regular electricity grid. The off-grid system works independently, with no connection to the utility grid.

The difference between the two types lies in four key factors. With an off-grid system, you are completely reliant on the sunlight and energy stored in the batteries, while in an on-grid system you can get continuous power even with low batteries or no sun. The other difference is in the utilization of excess energy. In off-grid systems, it is stored in the batteries for use at night or cloudy weather, while in an on-grid system the excess power is sent into the system which in turn reduces your electricity bill. When an off-grid system goes down you are left without power, while that is not the case with on-grid systems. There are no electricity bills with off-grid systems but there is an additional cost for batteries and equipment. While in an on-grid system you’ll receive a bill with minimal costs covering fixed expenses of the utility.

The details here matter a lot like a large chunk of your savings will be spent. It is best to do some research before getting a solar power system. To find out more about off-grid and on-grid systems, visit this website.
