How do I prepare my driveway for winter?

It depends on the material used for the driveway. Asphalt, for instance, handles temperature extremes more efficiently than concrete. Asphalt is also cheaper to install and less susceptible to salt. The downside is that it has a shorter lifespan than concrete and requires more frequent maintenance. While more resilient to weather extremes, asphalt tends to be less durable and is likely to suffer from wear and tear anyway.

It’s a known fact that concrete cannot handle temperature extremes that well and over time, might crack because of the freezing and thawing process during winter. Salt can also damage it. However, you can apply a sealant to protect it. Other than this common issue, concrete is highly durable. It can handle much more weight and can last up to 50 years with proper maintenance.

While more expensive than asphalt, concrete is still among the cheapest materials out there. It’s also versatile and when installed by experienced professionals, can look elegant. If you’ve seen some monoblock driveways in the UK, you’ll fall in love with their visual appeal. Baseline Contracts Ltd. has some examples of these gorgeous and durable driveways.
